What is MyBB?

While ago considered as an outsider, comparing to the big boards of Internet, MyBB is more and more popular, mostly for three of its qualities: simplicity, extensive administration panel and powerful plugin system. MyBB is a based on the PHP/MySQL technology, and is a free open source forum software, and has included AJAX and Web 2.0 features just-as-needed. Nothing too much heavy, but really practical for an everyday usage.

MyBB History

MyBB was originally developed on the base of XMB and DevBB, and the official development started 8 years ago, in 2002. It today counts more than 140,000 lines of code, and a dynamic community of about 28,000 members.

Review Updates:

  • June 2, 2011: Add MyBB GoMobile and several plugins.
  • January 6, 2011: Several fixes linked to MyBB 1.6.1.
  • April 24, 2010: Complete additional features that were missing. Update to MyBB 1.4.13.
  • December 2, 2009: New tutorial, MyBB URL Rewritting.
  • November 27, 2009: Migrate to MyBB 1.4.9.

MyBB is recommended for Large Community.

(and supports smaller communities perfectly as well.)

Moderation & Threads Management
Pre-Moderation In pre-moderation, every post needs to be validated by a moderator before being published.
Post-Moderation The moderation is done afterwards, if an administrator notices a problem or if a member reports something wrong. Each message is therefore directly published.
Reactive Moderation By reporting any problems, members are reactive against moderation problems. Moderators' main objective is to regularly check user reports, without having to follow each threads.

Unique Features

Key points and major differences that make MyBB unique:

  • MyBB Merge System is really simple to use and really useful for people that would like to switch.
  • Supporting SQLite is highly recommendable for administrators that host their bulletin board in a place where using a database is not possible (cheap hosters for example).

Final Words

MyBB is a really good alternative to classic forum software, with a real nice plus of providing a really dynamic and motivated community around it. It combines an easy to use administration interface with a simple and shiny appearance. Without attempting to support the entire range of features we could classically find in proprietary software, MyBB is a perfect forum for medium and large community. A sufficient security model is well implemented and ensure your forum not being invaded by hordes of spammers.

With more than 400 plugins and modifications, you will have a great choice to customize your MyBB installation and fit your users' needs. It is also well known for ensuring a high quality migration of existing forum, as the MyBB developers team provides the MyBB Merge System, that helps you replacing your old PhpBB 2 or vBulletin 3.8 installation with a new and modern bulletin board system. It could also be perfectly used in case of merging two existing boards, that is quite rare today.

And to conclude with another good news, it is open source and is proud to be! Congratulations to the MyBB team, that has made a really good job.

I've been using MyBB for

I've been using MyBB for quite some time now. From the surface, it has the closest resemblance to VBulletin, so do its features. I must say both of them shares around 80-90% similarities, with both also have their own unique features. My only complain about MyBB is, it is missing the feature to remotely upgrade install/upgrade the forum software/theme/plugins via the AdminCP. While it has the Plugin Manager to enable/disable the installed plugins, it can't upload & install the plugin by itself. Plugins have to be manually uploaded to the server/host and then be activated via the Plugin Manager. Quite inconvenient for some. This remote installation/upgrading feature is actually present in SMF and it simplifies the installation/upgrading process because user (the Admin) don't have to access the server CP or FTP software just for uploading some update files/theme files/plugin files as this can be done right within the AdminCP. If only MyBB is going to implement it soon, it would be one near-perfect forum software.

i am using mybb for a long

i am using mybb for a long time
in linux(ubuntu) firefox , the font shows poor alignment

I have used in the past IPB

I have used in the past IPB and VBulleitn and find mybb surpassess both of those.
I can't believe you can get this great software, and outstanding support for free.
I am looking forward to a long relationship with mybb especially since it is great for many uses.
Business and personal users alike should enjoy the easy configuration and the support that goes with it.

This is a very nice forum

This is a very nice forum system and easy to use.

I converted an existing forum

I converted an existing forum (3 years old, ~1500 members) from IPB to MyBB using their converter - and everything went just great, every post and every user was in place in the new database. The database itself was about 20% less in size. Now I only need to find a good theme and I'm ready co completely replace IPB with MyBB with all of its neat plugins!

I have used MyBB for a long

I have used MyBB for a long time and on the outside vBulletin may look better, but in fact I believe MyBB is better. I administrate multiple MyBB forums, SMF Forums, vBulletin and IPB forums. I find MyBB is much easier to develop for, and has almost all features of other forum systems, and if it does not they are easy to create through plugins. Best forum software out there.

Versatile and very flexible

Versatile and very flexible in-terms of modifications. Most impressive inherent anti-spam capabilities. We still have to get the first real spammer to have successfully registered and posted.

We monitor all the registration attempts from known IPs in the 'stopforumspam' database. Not one spambot has managed to make it past the registration procedure let alone post spam.

It could just be our luck but we have seen this too many times by spam-bots trying relentlessly but they have failed every time.

For me, this is the best

For me, this is the best forum software Smile.I've used vB, phpBB,SMF and few other bulletin boards but the one I really liked was myBB !
-It's open source, so definitely its secure
-The Community is enlarging day by day and they have a lot of cool plugins and themes
and believe me, there is atleast one theme released in a week. The big-guys of myBB also try to mimic the vB Mods etc. So its really the closest to vB.
-The Theme editing is extremely easy and friendly and that's one of the major reasons I use myBB.I love drawing ideas from my mind!
-All you there and that's presented quite neatly in the Administration Panel.
-Its fast and easy.Yes the easiest and fastest out of all the other BBs...atleast for me
-Easy Installation, without much ados and head-scratchings, clear and clean
-Cool Anti-Mess(or Spam) technologies that really work way better than phpBB's Anti-Spam functions
-Creating Plugins are also easy. There hooks in it and you get hooked to it soon!
-There are many more features and reasons that keep me from leaving myBB.
**All it needs is a better default theme! And yes, as the user above me said remotely updating the plugins. It really makes me lazy!**
Waiting for 1.6 Laughing out loud 2.0 TOO Tongue!

GetSatisfaction, MyBB, or SMF

GetSatisfaction, MyBB, or SMF 2.0?

I'm a member of a small independent iPhone game company. We're just getting off the ground and we want to have a forum on our website for support and community for our games. (We're wrapping up the first one now.) Smile

The designer are I are the mainstays of the company and we hire a programmer, artists, composer, and sound designer for our games. In other words, the designer and I have limited IT skills - we're not programmers ourselves.

I'm looking at SMF 2.0 but I worry that its going to take more time/skill than I have, to do it well. MyBB sounds like its the easiest (good looking, good working) forum option out there given that I don't have a knowledge of PHP, etc.

On a totally different note - I'm alternately looking at the ASP To me, this looks like the 2.0 version of Forums. I know I wouldn't have the customization control that I would if I used a forum software myself, but considering I have no history in programming languages, might this be the best option for me after all? Do you, as an experienced forum user/administrator find the features of GetSatisfaction to limit your experience or are they sufficient/exceptional?

I'd really appreciate any words of wisdom you have!

THANKS a bunch,

mybb is really great am using

mybb is really great
am using its for almost 3 year...
i found a better feature of mybb is ..we can edit the theme easily in template manager ..
its very nice...

So far the best free forum

So far the best free forum platform out there, yet still so much to go.
One of the best core + plugin experience I had was with bbPress, but it lacks so much. All the other free platforms have a very messy mod scene. MyBB may not be the perfect one, but it comes to between balance, mods and performance.

Best doesn't mean the best platform ever made for certain area, but sum of balance, and MyBB brings it.

I just wish that the mod community is more active so that it can bring Facebook Connect and Twitter login plugins. There's a tutorial on the web about Facebook, Twitter and Windows Live login but not as easy as just upload and enable the plugin.

You should check now, i think

You should check now, i think there is a facebook and windows live, and maybe a twitter login as well.

I'm looking for a forum software for my website. I'm visually impaired, and find that most admin panels aren't accessible with screen-readers/magnafires. Can anyone tell me if myBB is "blind" friendly? also, how do you install new theames on myBB?

MyBB is very recommended.

MyBB is very recommended. It's free and have great functionality. You will not upset with MyBB

I read this site while I was

I read this site while I was choosing forums, though I ended up with trying a few of them, including some paid one Wink

Now I have to search back for this site to post my comment: MyBB is the best.

It's technically fast, scalable, and more importantly, it is absolutely intuitive to be a good admin - everything should be of common sense, just like with MyBB.

It makes life easier and it's the best.

MyBB is good forum software,

MyBB is good forum software, but in my opinion SMF is far better. MyBB default theme is ugly, admin panel isn't easy to learn such as panel in smf, and community is very poor looking forward to community that SMF has.

its the best free forum

its the best free forum software and we use it on Cricket Life.

I have worked with few CMS

I have worked with few CMS like: wordpress and Drupal and currently building my programming tutorial website using Drupal. In addition to my site, I wanted to add forum and I was really confused what software to use. I know, Drupal have inbuilt module to handle forum independently without using other software but, I really wanted full featured forum with plugins and themes to that site. I don't know, whether mybb works for me or not but, its open source and I am really attracted to open source not because of it is free but, because it has large community to contribute codes when technology grows up rapidly Smile.

the site is nice cool love it

the site is nice cool love it allot my site has been made by mybb and yes all credits goes to mybb devoloper

mybb is the best forum board ever made better then vbulletin.

It's a great script if you know its limitations and how to go around them. It took me some time to get it all figured about but it's much better now.

The best forum software from

The best forum software from my POV. I used phpBB for a long time. Then I find MyBB. far far far better than phpBB. very much easy to use. Huge no of plugins. and at last most fastest any great support from their community forum. I just love it.

The best forum software.

The best forum software. fullstop. Absolutely love it!

I currently run a vBulletin 4

I currently run a vBulletin 4 forum that is growing everyday. I recently came back to MyBB after being inactive after so long, and I realised that MyBB is amazing. You have complete control over your forum, with great user moderation and a huge list of plugins, MyBB is great for big communities and I would recommend it any day. And to top things off, the support is outstanding.

MYBB is about as intuitive as

MYBB is about as intuitive as a brick.

People may love this software, but it takes what should be a very simple process and over complicates it.
Like many forums it installs easy. Thats where the fun ends.

Support on the board is not good at all, the community hardly ever answers or helps.
The program is lacking many basics and over complicates mod.

In the forum world SMF may have issues with out of date mod, but addition is point and click on almost everything.
MyBB is heavy and clunky, it seems that many people get hooked on these clicks in communities and never look at the
big picture.

1. Is it easy for Admins
2 Is it easy for members
3 Does it have good support.

For me MyBB falls short on two aspects admins and support.
Xenforo like MYBB are trying to reinvent the wheel by leaving simple options out.
SMF and PHPBB seem to get that people want certain items, yet they are often missed in many websites.

I was disappointed in MyBB and place it at the bottom of forums I would try.

I recently came back to MyBB

I recently came back to MyBB after being inactive after so long, and I realised that MyBB is amazing. beli rumah
