Forumotion is absolutely THE BEST. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to start a website or forum. I, myself, own a Forumotion forum and it is totally awesome! Best of all, it's FREE! Forumotion also has its own support forums.
they may tell you it's free but if you dont want google ads all over the place the amount you have pay to remove it's silly u be better off making your own,
and if you deside one day you want to my your own you will lost all your posts & members because they dont release your datebase
One note - no sql dump provided. If you will decide to move to own stand-alone forum - you can't transfer all users/content. Better find forum hosting with export function.
Its easy to remove the ads for free just put this in the css
go to admin-panel>display>colors>css
HERE IS THE CSS CODE
.module-advert, #main-content iframe{
display:none !important;
}
Forumotion is very easy to use, and it does not take long to get your website up and running. Their admin control panel is great and very easy to use. Their uptime and reliability is unmatched from any other hosting provider I have seen, and when they claim 99.99% uptime, they mean it. Never once in my 3 1/2 years of working with forumotion sites have I seen a website go down.
The portal feature is also very convenient. This is something that is not always easy to set up with other forum solutions. (such as a clean install of phpBB or myBB). Another interesting feature is the ability to convert between phpBB3, phpBB2, punBB, or a very old version of IP board. The conversion has never taken more than 15 seconds and seamlessly retains all posts and users. It is worth noting that forumotion significantly modded these forum softwares, and they do not give the exact same functionality as a clean install would give, but the consistency in their services makes up for it.
Cons:
My biggest issue with forumotion has always been the lock-in. They do not hand out their databases and will not do so for any price, meaning that if you ever need to move hosts, you are likely looking at starting over from scratch. Their staff isn't very helpful on this matter either, and will not assist you in moving your website under any terms. Forumotion has the basics needed to get a forum started, but if your site grows beyond what forumotion can provide and you want more control over your forum, your options are very limited.
Summary:
Forumotion is a solid free forum hosting provider that has excellent uptime and is very easy to use. The lock-in has been enough to keep me from starting my more recent websites with them, however. While they provide all of the basics for free, larger forums may have larger needs, and the inability to move hosts is a major disadvantage that is very hard for me to feel comfortable with. Unless your needs are generally smaller, I would recommend finding a good free forum host that will create SQL dumps for its users, even if they charge $50+ for each dump.
