I am working on building a new site around an existing forum community. The forums currently use Yabb 2.2, and I'd like to convert them to a better, cleaner software. I want a fully-featured forum software that can bridge and visually integrate with wordpress/joomla. It seems the best choice for this is phpbb3 and wordpress, but I'm having a lot of issues converting the current forum over. I've read that it is possible to convert yabb to smf and then smf to phpbb, but it is proving to be more of a headache than anticipated. I have a few issues with the first conversion, and a lot more with the second. I wouldn't be opposed to running IPB or vBulletin, but prefer free and open software. Is there someone that can give pointers, or even completely new suggestions?
After a little more research, maybe I'll go with xenForo and WP. But it still needs a SMF middle-man conversion.
Indeed, it seems it's the best way to migrate:
YaBB -> SMF -> Xenforo or Wordpress/bbPress
