Forum software that results in more interesting discussions?

Do you know any particular forum software that tends to produce more interesting and insightful discussions? And more concise discussions?

(For example, I think the discussions at slashdot.org are usually very interesting. So, had Slashdot been forum software, I'd say it tended to produce more interesting and insightful discussions.)

(I posted this question 8 days ago here: http://www.forummatrix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=878
no reply so far, so posting here too --- anyway, the more people who answer, the better Smile from-my-point-of-view )

Kind regards, Magnus

Hi Magnus, nice to have you here...

About your question, I would say, without no doubts, and with some dispair, that the forum software itself will not increase the quality of the discussion. It will only depend on the members of your community, and their goodwill to maintain an healthy and interesting discussion (= avoid reaching Godwin's law Wink

However, I think several features may help keeping a good organization and an higher quality forum:

  • Detect Duplicate Threads and Related Threads: this way, you will avoid someone posting ten times the same question or stupid argument. It should also prevent power members from being upset.
  • Words Filtering: at least, if the discussion deteriorates, it will not be clearly displayed Wink
  • Registrations that need approval from someone: in this case, no surprise, each new member has a godfather, that guarentees his godchildren, even if the direct consequence is lower number of members

All these features are available in the Forum Comparator, so do not hesitate to have a look there to find this miracle software.

Ah and yes, about Forum Matrix, it's true that their forum has never been really active. I don't think it should change any day now (without all the respect to our "competitor" Tongue

That's correct I suppose --- but perhaps the forum software can make it easy for people to filter out uninteresting pointless comments. That's how SlashDot and Reddit work?
I'd say the end result is fairly similar to the forum software producing more interesting discussions Smile

This might seem silly, but I started developing a somewhat new kind of forum software (or so I hope) a few months ago. It has some features I cannot find in your list above or in the Forum Comparator Smile (well otherwise I would never have started that project)

Perhaps the software will be somewhat completed in half a year and I'll post a link Smile
But most software projects fail don't they.

Yes, indeed, rate comments could also be a nice way to increase the general quality of a forum software. (with some rules like if a comment is below -5 points, simply hide it, if it is above 5 points, mark it as quality post) Several forum softwares do that, and it's called Message Rating in the Forum Comparator.

Good luck for your new project, but indeed, most of new forum software projects disappear after 1 or 2 years. I would suggest you to concentrate on your own needs, at least, you will develop something for you only, and if your forum is getting popular, then you can start create a dedicated project for people interested in having the same forum that the one you deployed for your community.

That's a very good piece of adwice Smile I suppose that's what I will do. I've started working part time already though, so as to find time for development --- although the project will probably fail. This makes life more exhilarating / exciting Smile

Thanks, Magnus

Good luck then! I wish you all the best with your project.
